Working as a travel photographer I have had the opportunity of visiting some of the worlds most beautiful cities It would be hard to find another the size of Leipzig which comes close to equalling some its achievements It is the birthplace of one of the greatest composers that ever lived, Johann Sebastian Bach The composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy made it his home and lived there until his death on the 4th November 1847 Between 1765 and 1768, Johann Wolfgang Goethe studied in Leipzig A scene from his celebrated "Faust", "Auerbach's Cellar in Leipzig", made this wonderful restaurant world-famous Leipzig was the starting point for the events which led to the Peaceful Revolution of 1989 You can visit the original locations of St Nicholas's Church, where after the Prayers for Peace were said, the demonstrations started along Augustusplatz and the central ring road to the headquarters of the secret police (Stasi), part of which has been incorporated into the Museum in the "Round Corner" The City of Leipzig converted an enormous circular building specifically to house the largest panoramic photograph in the world It has one of the the largest Opera Houses in the world with a staff of over 700 people Leipzig is home to the national book collection with over 8 million volumes Leipzig has one of the largest railway stations in the world It was the birthplace of Sam Hahnemann, the Father of Homeopathy It has some stunning architecture and miles of wonderful bars and restaurants This list could go on and on ............. It has some of the friendliest people you will ever meet If you only ever go to Germany once - make sure that you include a visit to Leipzig & Dresden You will love them both |
